Lourdes Grobet

Semblance

She studied Plastic Arts at the Universidad Iberoamericana; Graphic Design and Photography at the Cardiff College of Art and Derby College in England. Her academic training was inspired by Katy Horna, Mathias Goeritz and Gilberto Aceves Navarro, as well as El santo. Most of Grobet’s work is related to contemporary painting and the thoughts by Mathias Goeritz about artistic freedom, setting aside the limitations within the academy.

Since she was a Little girl she was drawn to art and the conditions she was surrounded by. In her home, there was no approach to art but were very open regarding social relationships, which allowed her to meet all kind of people. Within her family circle, there was the tradition to attend professional wrestling matches (Las Luchas), however her father wouldn’t allow her to attend this type of shows since they were not considered for women.

She danced for 5 years until a disease made her stop and she could not do any type of exercise anymore.

Then, she took drawing classes at the Academy San Carlos, but her parents wouldn’t allow it for its liberal environment, so they sent her to study with a catholic professor José Suárez Olvera. Lourdes helped him with his wall paintings in the San Francisco church. She discovered this was not her thing so she resigned and her parents sent her to study at the Universidad Iberoamericana where she really discovered her creativity together with her teacher Mathias Goeritz.

Her street photography is powerful, dynamic, full of texture, and with an exciting narrative.

On the other hand, the photography allowed her to capture rhythm and color in a modern way and with a higher scope. The lessons by Kathy Horna and Gilberto Aceves Navarro taught her that her proposal goes beyond the aesthetics since she highlights the image of great wrestlers.

She co-founded the Mexican Photography Council together with Pedro Meyer, Lázaro Blanco and the art critic Raquel Tibol. Right after Grobet got back from England, she joined this Project which gave a new language to Mexican photography.

She has also participated in collective exhibitions in Mexico and abroad. Also, shows and musical theater gave her the possibility to promote photography through different media, different from the traditional ones. Grobet collaborates with several museums and publishing houses, for filing, catalogue publications, and books of art.
