Poster Contest
Azul Morris

When I received the invitation to be part of the jury of the tenth edition of the International Image Festival, besides of being honored, I felt it was a great opportunity to get closer to such different image creators and be able reflect about their work. Shortly after, I was also surprised about the number of countries that were participating: seventy-seven countries! I expected to live a wonderful experience.

And I did. With “Water” as the main topic—apparently very common— I had before me strokes, colors, techniques, but above all, thoughts and cultural emotions of each country. Within this diversity I could see how the same topic was expressed, with similarities and differences, from different formal resources to achieve a synthesis created with the image and the typography. I was shocked by many works, but as an example there is this poster that seems to raise its voice “¡H2O!” and evokes The Scream by Edvard Munch; or this other one that, with an excellent photographical composition, shows a chaotic scene of destruction which is about to be saved by a single drop of water. It was very interesting and moving to look every proposal as if they were different paths searching for alternatives.

Finally, having participated as jury next to Alejandro Magallanes and Bata Knežević was a great and incredibly enriching experience, to be able to exchange insights and analysis that we managed to build easily and, with no doubt, it would not have had that fluency without the incredible coordination of Frida Castañeda Bulos, Associate Director of FINI.
