Semblance
Alejandro Magallanes is a versatile illustrator born in Mexico City in 1971. He studied graphic design in the School of Plastic Arts of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).
He is worldwide recognized for his posters and illustrations committed to the social reality of his country. His personal style is characterized by the union of images and words, a mixture of everything the artist sees and gets his inspiration from.
In 1996, he founded, together with Leonel Sagahón, the studio La Máquina del Tiempo. He has worked for several social and cultural institutions, in the development of editorial projects, institutional images, posters, etc., and in 1997, he coordinated the exhibition “No todos los carteles son bonitos”[Not all posters are nice].
For Alejandro Magallanes “one image indeed is worth a thousand words”, however words generate millions of different images and are a great source of inspiration.
The work of Magallanes is very diverse since it has not a unique technique or style. To create his work, he usually uses different inks, acrylics, photographs, collages, drawings, and even objects. There are always analogue as well as digital processes in the same proportion. His images are characterized for always having game and sense of humor. He says his images have to be direct and look fresh and spontaneous.
Like in a children game, Alejandro Magallanes looks to be surprised at each step. He is nourished from his surroundings, from movies, from fun situations…
